Australia Approves Uranium Supply to India After Decade Long Talks

Australia has agreed to supply uranium to India after more than ten years of discussions, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties. The announcement was made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Melbourne, where he held talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The agreement is expected to support India's civilian nuclear energy programme and strengthen long term energy security. Australia has some of the world's largest uranium reserves, while India is expanding its nuclear power capacity to meet rising energy demand and clean energy goals.

The decision comes shortly after India concluded key defence agreements with Indonesia, reflecting New Delhi's continued efforts to deepen strategic partnerships across the Indo Pacific region.

During the meeting, both leaders reviewed cooperation in trade, investment, defence, clean energy, critical minerals, technology, education and maritime security. They reaffirmed their commitment to expanding economic and strategic relations.

Officials said the uranium agreement will contribute to India's energy requirements while opening new opportunities for cooperation in advanced technology, renewable energy, mining and infrastructure.

India and Australia have witnessed steady growth in bilateral relations over the past decade through increased trade, defence cooperation and people to people exchanges. The latest agreement is expected to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

The agreement also reflects the growing importance of India and Australia as partners in promoting stability, economic growth and secure supply chains in the Indo Pacific region.
